CHAPTER NINETEEN
The Cries of Small Children
Tondbert opened his eyes to a dark room. He wondered for a moment what had woken him, tempted to close his eyes again and sleep. Somewhere, in the far reaches of his mind, his trainer yelled at him that you never woke without reason. He sat up and strained to look around the room.
Nothing moved. Osric's loud snores sounded like a mating boar. Tondbert lit a lantern, padded to the door and put his ear against it.
"Help!"
The cry was so weak and far away that he barely heard it. He walked back and shook Osric. "Someone is calling for help."
"Whuza?" Osric asked.
"Outside, someone is shouting for help," Tondbert said.
Osric groaned and levered himself upright. "I don't hear anything."
"I'm going to have a look," Tondbert said. "You can come with me, or you can go back to sleep. It's your choice."
Grumbling, Osric pulled his boots on and grabbed his sword. "This is blackmail."
"On the way back to the room, you can rescue your food."
"Hey, that's right," Osric said, brightening.
Osric and Tondbert crept down the stairs to the front door. It hung open, the bolts cracked off it. A small knock sent their heart rates rocketing.
"Help," a child's voice said.
Tondbert walked over, holding the lantern up and looked out the open door. A group of boys between the ages of six and ten shivered out in the cold, dressed in rags.
Tondbert waved. "Come in, come in."
The four boys rushed inside, and Tondbert closed the door.
"Wait, our dad is still outside," the eldest boy said. "The animal-leech might get him."
Tondbert opened the door again and peered out. An elderly man strode powerfully up the road towards him. He met Tondbert's gaze and smiled creepily. Tondbert slammed the door shut. He looked at the four boys standing in front of them, all smirking.
"We heard about Uncle Pascent," the eldest boy said. "Granddad wasn't happy you killed him. He was such a talented singer. Then that stupid squirrel kept us away, but he's gone now. So why don't we play a game?"
"I don't think we want to play any games," Osric said.
"Relax, it's just a harmless game of tag." The boy reached for Tondbert.
